Project situation: GP led scheme, run by their management company, to develop new 8 GP practice premises with accommodation for a 100 hour Pharmacy and Dental Practice.

Project brief: Ashley House was appointed to assist in the relocation of the practice out of the existing multi-occupied, overcrowded Havant Health Centre, to free up space for the remaining GP Practices in the Health Centre to expand into.

Project solution: A detailed site search was undertaken and due to the restrictions imposed by the local planning department, that the service had to remain within the town centre, involved the full co-operation of the local Council who were consulted closely on any potential site. After the lengthy and detailed site search, terms were agreed to purchase a parcel of land, which was a redundant staff playing field, owned by the Portsmouth Water Company, to provide this modern purpose built Primary Care Centre, which will be fully compliant with all regulations and allow the practice to deliver first class care to the wider community.

Points of interest: The planning condition required the Practice to provide not only a prominent ‘landmark’ building, but also to make a contribution to patient transport, in the form of a subsidised taxi service to and from the health centre, as there is currently only a sparse bus service to the site.

Local Press extracts: GP and senior partner at the practice, Mike Maclean, said that the surgery needed to move in order to keep developing. ‘we were overcrowded and a lot of people used a limited number of rooms, the new surgery allows us to increase our services and offer something more and also take on new patients.'

Ivan Morely, a member of the Havant Community Board, said the new surgery was a great thing for the community. 'It is a great enhancement for the town,' he added. 'It offers a much wider range of facilities and everyone I have spoken to is really happy about it.'
