A new health facility in the centre of Bracknell offering an extended range of health services

Building size:  6,608m²

The site is a key component of the Bracknell town centre regeneration programme and its strategic location close to both rail and bus stations, will localise and improve access to many community services.

Project brief: A wide range of services from GP led general medical to specialist provider services involving 3 hospital trusts.

Project Status: The plans for the Bracknell HealthSpace on the site of the current Skimped Hill Health Centre have been submitted by Ashley House, the developer leading the project. The plans should be considered early in 2011. Work could start on site later in the year with completion towards the end of 2012.

Project solution: The £20 million HealthSpace will bring a wide range of services closer to home for many people. These will include GP and dental services, diagnostics, outpatients, x-ray, physiotherapy, podiatry, mental health and sexual health services. It will also house an urgent care centre, an alternative to A&E for minor injuries and ailments such as sprains, stings and fever. The HealthSpace is expected to be used by thousands of patients a year.

Demands for a multi-purpose ‘one-stop shop’ for health in the centre of Bracknell offering an extended range of services was one of the key themes to emerge from the local Right Care, Right Place public consultation which finished in 2008.

Services: 2 GP practices, diagnostic services, out-patient, urgent –care, children services, dental care, mental health and pharmacy.

Points of interest:
Ashley House provided innovative funding and leasing arrangements to allow the commissioners with flexibility and control over the services delivered from this flagship which links into the Right Care Right Place policy.

By co-locating and integrating extra care with health provides simpler patient pathways, opportunities for costs savings through efficiency measures and a more dynamic and supported work environment for staff.

“ This is a real milestone in our plans to offer an extended range of health services from 21st century facilities in the heart of Bracknell.”

“NHS Berkshire East and its partners – local GPs, Bracknell Forest Council and the developer Ashley House – are all committed to bringing this project to fruition so that local patients can start getting the healthcare they need in a purpose-built building close to home at the earliest opportunity.”

Sally Kemp
NHS Berkshire East Chairman

Jonathan Holmes, Chief Executive of Ashley House, said: "We are delighted to have reached this important milestone, achieved through a close working partnership with NHS Berkshire East, local GPs and the other local stakeholders. This goes a long way to ensuring new healthcare facilities for the population of Bracknell and the surrounding area.

“We are looking forward to developing HealthSpace in the coming months, to finalise construction plans and ensure that the targets for delivery set with NHS Berkshire East and the local GPs are met."
