Working together to create a space to house a full range of social welfare and health services, all under one roof

Open Door, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire in partnership with The Big Life Group Charity. Working effectively within a Public-Private Partnership, Commissioners and service providers from the North East Lincolnshire region came together to specify a space capable of housing a full range of social welfare and Health services, all under one roof.

The new Open Door Health and Social Welfare Centre provides a modern local Health service facility, where all Community members can access a wide range of Health and social welfare services.

Project background

Built on a former school site in an area of priority regeneration, this new model of service delivery provides Health and social welfare services to the East Marsh Community of Grimsby. This desperately-needed facility, which is the first of its kind in Grimsby, provides an innovative solution delivering a new service model which enables the NHS to focus on people who typically have not had access to mainstream or traditional Health services, including; drug users, homeless people, offenders, sex workers, migrant communities and people excluded from services due to challenging behavior.

What we did

Initially North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Partnership (NELCTP) commissioned research into a new Health and social welfare solution to meet the needs of people who experienced high Health deprivation because of low income, poor housing and poor environment. Following the research Ashley House was appointed by a Big Life Group Charity called ‘Open Door’ as development partner to manage, design and develop a new Health & Social Welfare Centre to accommodate non-mainstream services. Ashley House acquired a large ex-school site and Practical Completion of the Open Door scheme was achieved in August 2013.

The new building houses a range of health and social welfare services for local people.

Points of interest

North East Lincolnshire CCG and the Open Door Group worked closely with Ashley House to create a fully integrated Healthcare environment that delivers a wide range of Health and social welfare services under one roof. These flexible one-stop-shop facilities are managed by Open Door Care CIC, a social enterprise, and are available for Healthcare professionals, Community groups and individuals, contributing to the wellbeing of the whole Community.

The completed scheme now provides the area with an eye catching state-of-the-art facility next to Ashley House’s Extra Care development for the over 60s. Ashley House was chosen by Open Door CIC by way of a formal selection process as their preferred development partner to deliver the scheme from site acquisition through to Practical Completion of the facility.

Ashley House appointed the design team and also underwent a detailed engagement process, designing the centre to achieve a successful planning consent before procuring the building contractor via a competitive tender. The scheme was funded by way of a 100% capital grant to Open Door by the Department of Health, and brought in on time and budget by Ashley House. The building was designed by Clive Sall Architecture, and was constructed by Wildgoose Construction Ltd.
